National Girl Child day, 2023

e-Nyayaganga, under the scheme of Access to Justice by the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India (GoI) in collaboration with P.U.L.E.R. (People United for Law, Education, and Rehabilitation), NLIU celebrated the National Girl Child Day at Mendori Government School on Tuesday, January 24, 2023.

The aim for the event was to promote awareness about the rights of girl children and to promote the importance of their education, health, and nutrition.

The event was administered by Dr. Abhinav Gupta, Dr. Pooja Kiyawat, and Mr. Sudhanshu Pratap Singh. It started with a brief address to the children on gender bias that prevail in society by Ms. Prachi Chowdhary, Project Management Head, PULER and Ms. Neha Kumari, a second-year PULER member. Both the PULER members explained the importance of education for a girl child and how every role in society can be performed by both men and women. They also enlightened the children of class one to class five about the various forms in which gender bias still exists in normal day-to-day life.

After the brief, a drawing competition was organised. There was no particular theme for the competition and the children were free to draw from their imagination. The children were provided with the drawing sheets, necessary stationery, and colours. A time limit of one hour was set for the same. Children drew a variety of portrayals. Some of which included the national flag, houses, cars, God idols, the Taj Mahal, and many more. At the end of the competition, the best three drawings as judged by Dr. Pooja Kiyawat were given prizes. Three students from class fifth achieved the first three positions in the drawing competition where the first position was bagged by Rita which was followed by Sanju and the 3rd position was bagged by Riyanshi. Prizes in the form of drawing kits were given to the winners by Dr. Abhinav Gupta and Dr. Pooja Kiyawat. The drawing kits and gifts were sponsored by e-Nyayaganga.

Later, the children were made aware about the gender stereotype of associating the color pink with girls and the color blue with boys. The students of class four and class five were provided with an illustrated booklet containing information on sexual harassment and how to deal in case such situations arise, meaning of wrong touch and the laws relating to the subject. The children listened keenly and acknowledged the existence of gender inequality prevailing among them.

The elating moments of the day were captured by the e-Nyayaganga team members who indulged with young children in showing their creativity on the drawing sheet and also distributed chocolates and booklets to the young children.

The motive of spreading awareness about the rights of girls and highlighting the inequalities that they face in their lives was accomplished. The event was an enlightening experience both for the children who were educated about the importance of the girl child and the National Girl Child Day and for the e-Nyayaganga team members who were equally able to comprehend the circumstances which the students from underprivileged communities have to face.

In the end Chocolates were distributed to all  children. A picture of all the children holding the illustrated booklet in their hands was clicked by the e-nyayaganga team marking the end of the event celebration.

We thank the School Administration, NLIU Administration, Dr. Abhinav Gupta, Dr. Pooja Kiyawat, Dr. Bir Pal Singh and team members of e-Nyayaganga and PULER, NLIU who made this event a grand success.
